Director Lars von Trier would probably never admit to having something so conventional as a muse, but if he had one, it would be Charlotte Gainsbourg. She has appeared in his "Antichrist," "Melancholia" and, now, "Nymphomaniac: Vol. Much of her work involves going to uncomfortable places, including graphic sex scenes, mutilation, humiliation and more. Though, as she says in a recent interview, not all of that is her. In "Nymphomaniac," she plays the title character, who relates her story over the course of two films. She talked about the process of making the film, and working with von Trier.

For a project that initially began as a joke—or so thought Charlotte Gainsbourg—Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac Volume I and Volume II easily became some of the most anticipated foreign films of the year. On set, the whole process was anything but sexy, according to Stacy Martin, the 23 year-old actress who plays the younger version of the main character Joe. When I spoke with her at the press day for "Nymphomaniac" she walked me through what filming a sex scene was like before it was altered. While most the composite footage won't make it into US theaters, the uncut version of the sex scenes only featured the midsection of the actors' porn double.
He even mentioned his conversation with Charlotte Gainsbourg during the infamous press conference he gave at Cannes in May The film was not to be smoothed over, elegant, or polished in any way. He wanted us to make Nymphomaniac look like a student film, with all the imperfections, liberties, and imperfections that that implies. Production even described to each actor and technician the worst-case scenario of what could happen on set…in any case, their descriptions were much trashier than what actually happened on set.
